What is March 1st Independence Movement, which is a very meaningful day for Koreans 🇰🇷🇰🇷?

Hello! I’m Jimin Translation.

You don't have to know about the history of other countries. But for those of you who like BTS, I believe Korea is not just another country. So I would introduce you this very meaningful day for all Koreans.🇰🇷

Today is March 1st and it’s 101st anniversary of ‘March 1st Independence Movement.’

‘March 1st Independence Movement’ is the civil disobedience•independence movement without any violence, against the Empire of Japan.

Japan colonized Korea by force in 1910 and they did many colonial exploitation policy. Many Koreans died and suffered by those things and many Koreans did their best to make Korea free and independent. You can see Mr.Sunshine(陽光先生 in Chinese) on Netflix if you want to look see this history more.  (I’ve seen it about 7 times and it’s really interesting.)

Then at Paris Peace Conference in 1919, Thomas Woodrow Wilson, who was the president of United States of America, claimed the principle of racial self-determination. Koreans back then heard that news and got hope that Korea could be independent. So they decided to declare the independence of Korea.

On March 1st, 1919, 33 Korean leaders gathered together and read aloud the Declaration of Independence in Seoul and after that people all over the country participated in demonstrations. And students played a major role in this demonstration.

According to the record, 2 million people participated in this movement and 7,509 people were killed, 15,850 people were injured and 45,306 were arrested.

This movement didn’t make Korea independent at once. But after this movement, many organizations for independence movement were established. My great-grandparents also went to Manchuria to join one of those organizations and died there.

Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea was also established after this movement. It was established in April in Shanghai, China and it held the central place in Korean independence movement until Korea became independent in 1945. After the independence, the government of Korea was established based on Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.

Because of the March 1st Independence movement, Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea could be established. And because there was Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, Korea could be founded. This is why March 1st Independence Movement is so precious to all Koreans.

We celebrate this day as a national holiday and used to have lots of ceremonies all over the country. This year, because of the epidemic, the scale of ceremony is smaller than last year but still we are celebrating this happily. (Last year was 100th anniversary so we had a really big ceremony called ‘Spring of 100 years’) Remembering all those people who died for the people of Korea, freedom and for all the values which they valued more than their lives is really sad and painful. But we can be who we are now because they were there. So we are celebrating this happily.

If there hadn’t been those people, I could not live with my own name and own language. And I don’t want to imagine it even in my dreams, but all those beautiful songs of BTS wouldn’t exist. It makes me really scared. But they were there at those days, so I can live with my own name, own language and with the beautiful songs of BTS.

Thank you for reading this long article and I hope my article helped you understand Korea more. Have a nice day! I purple you 💜
